Counseling & Consultation Sessions

Support When You Need It

To talk with a counselor, get started with medication, join a group, or start another mental health service, a Counseling & Consultation session is your first step. Schedule a Counseling & Consultation session on PatientLink or by calling CAPS. Appointments open for scheduling one week in advance.

Note: Counseling & Consultation visits are not intended for crisis support. If you need immediate support, please drop in at CAPS Main or CAPS North during business hours or call CAPS 2/47. View more crisis support resources.

Is this the same as counseling?

Care Pathways Counseling & Consultation Sessions are just one kind of counseling and one-on-one support offered at CAPS. These sessions are where everyone starts at CAPS and a great option if you're looking for a couple of tune-ups during the semester or if you’re interested in starting other services at CAPS. During your appointment, you'll talk about anything that would ordinarily come up in a counseling session with a specific focus on naming strategies for managing that situation, exploring self-care options, and collaborating in planning any next steps with services or resources.

Why do I need to speak with a counselor to start medication?

Counseling & Consultation sessions are your first step to start mental health services at CAPS, including medication management. During your session, you will talk with a counselor about your concerns, symptoms, and goals. Your counselor will ask about your mental health history and get the information needed for the two of you to decide on the best plan for you. Whether your next step is medication management at CAPS, off-campus, or another service, your counselor will help you get connected.

How many appointments can I make?

You can make as many Counseling & Consultation appointments as you like. These sessions can only be scheduled one at a time.

Counseling & Consultation sessions are just one type of mental health support offered at CAPS. Students can get mental health support through any of our Care Pathways menu of services. You can talk with your counselor at any time about what plan works best for you.
